Kristin Humphries October Blog Post 3:Share Your Reading Life

As I read Share Your Reading Life by Routman, it made me reflect about my actions as a reader. I really enjoy reading! I love having choice in the books that I read. If I read a really great book, I am always eager to pass along to others about its charm. I have to agree with Routman when she stated that is important to share our love of reading with our students. They listen to us in class as we read to them and when we share different materials. We should be eager to share our enjoyment of reading with them. They should know that we read because we love to, not because it is an obligation.

Mrs. Routman shared several examples about how she encourages her students to discover the joy of reading. She begins the school year by sharing her favorite books with her class. She explains to them why she feels so passionate about reading. Routman describes how important it is to have home libraries. She also gives the students time to have discussions about their favorite authors and time to share their books with fellow students. Routman explained how she uses reading logs. She herself uses a reading log. She finds that it is a great tool to use to describe herself as a reader. She emphasized that this shouldn’t be used as another assignment that parents must sign off on each night for homework. The students should look at the log as a prized possession that speaks volumes about their love of reading. I look forward to using reading logs as a tool for my students and for myself.

  1. I was also struck on how she used reading logs and then shared them with the class. I believe they can be a very powerful tool for young readers. I would love to see the reading logs developed by your students.

  2. Hi Kristin,
I appreciate that you want to use reading logs with your students too. What I appreciated the most about Routman's reading logs is how they were used to provide students with an opportunity to really share not just what they were reading but what they were thinking about what they were reading. I also loved how Routman used their reading logs not just to assess their reading but to learn more about them as readers. Thank you! Dawn
