Laura Brown's October Blog Post

Share Your Reading Life by Routman had many great ideas and things to think not only in my classroom but in my own personal reading journey. I really like the idea of the teacher sharing with the students his/her favorite books. These could be books from childhood as well as current books. It shows the student how important reading is to the teacher which can motivate the students to think reading is important as well. Students love to know about the teacher and what better way to have the students get to know you than by telling them about your reading journey. A reading log is a great way to keep up with what the teacher is reading and to show the students what you are reading.

I would like to start shared reading time in my classroom. This is important to also show how important reading is to the students. If a student is excited about what they are reading, they will want to share this with the teacher and their peers. It is also a good way to get students interested in reading topics they may not have been interested in before. I want my students to have an anchor chart in their notebooks so they can keep up with authors of books they liked. That way they can remember the author's name and they can get books that are by the same author.

Reading can be such a fun, personal, and learning filled experience. I really enjoyed reading this chapter because it allowed me to take a step back and think about my own favorite books and stories. Reading this chapter made me think about how sharing my love for books with my students will open up wonderful opportunities and love for reading.

  1. Laura - so much of we enjoy as readers is the same as our students. Go for the share time and I am sure you will find that it is time well spent. I would love to see what your students do with their reading journals.

  2. Hi Laura,
I loved how Routman encourages all of us to really share our reading lives with our students and to model a joy for reading through book talks, through interactive shared reading, and through conferencing with students about the books they love to read. I appreciate how you are working to implement a shared reading time and anchor charts for their top ten book lists. Thanks, Dawn
